Welcome back to the Makers Mindful Coder Series. This week, we embark on a powerful journey toward building and enhancing self-confidence. As we delve into our focus areas, it’s crucial to recognise the foundational role of regular mindfulness meditation in this process.

Research shows that engaging in mindfulness practices helps build emotional intelligence (EI), cultivating self-awareness. This increased awareness allows for better management, laying the groundwork for developing healthier mental habits.

Our focus is on understanding that confidence is a skill that can be developed over time, using mindfulness meditation, mental habits and positive action to build competence. Let’s take a look at some of what we covered this week:

Confidence is a Skill

Embrace the concept that confidence, like any other skill, can be built and strengthened through practice. This perspective encourages a proactive approach to personal development, inviting us to consider how differently we might approach challenges if we were actively working to enhance our confidence.

The Power of Positive Self-Talk

The words we use to talk to ourselves have a significant impact on our self-confidence. By choosing to engage in positive self-talk, we not only build our self-esteem but also reinforce our support system within ourselves. We can learn to more accurately assess ourselves through reflection, feedback and mindfulness practice and better yet, leverage our strengths and kindly address our shortcomings.

Embracing Self-Care and Compassion

Self-care and compassion play a crucial role in our confidence-building journey. Treating ourselves with kindness and understanding is essential, reminding us that we deserve the same care and attention we give to others.

Shifting Focus to Strengths

Acknowledging and appreciating our strengths and talents is key to boosting self-confidence. This process involves recognising our worth and allowing ourselves to be works in progress, continuously growing and evolving.

Cultivating Gratitude

Reflecting on and being grateful for the people who support us, our hard work and progress helps ground us in our confidence-building journey. Gratitude turns our focus to the positive aspects of our lives, including the strides we’ve made in our personal and professional development.

This week’s reflection questions:

  • Looking at confidence as a skillset we can build, what’s one thing you can practice that would increase your skill in confidence?
  • How can you incorporate more positive self-talk into your daily routine, especially in moments of self-doubt?
  • In what way can you practice self-care and self-compassion more consistently?
  • Reflect on your progress and areas where you are a work in progress. What positive qualities did you utilise to achieve that progress?
  • How can you bring more gratitude into your life, and how can you include yourself in this gratitude?

At Makers, we believe in the holistic development of our learners. Building technical skills goes hand in hand with cultivating a resilient and confident mindset. This week’s focus on self-confidence is designed to empower you not just as a coder, but as an individual ready to tackle life’s challenges with strength and grace.
